Cakes
As a family on a tight budget, recently we had a birthday party on a shoe-string and it went really well. I bought a $3.99 large 3L tub of HOKEY-POKEY ice cream and tipped it onto a cake board, cut it into shape of a number 2 and decorated it with lollies and sprinkles (and of course the obligatory two candles).
A real hit - even in winter!!

Thanks for sharing your ideas
I just wanted to say thank you to 'familyof6' for your wonderful idea of making your own icecream birthday cake. My son is 2 today and my payday is not until tomorrow, but I very much wanted to at least give him a birthday cake today and was trying to think of what I could do on a low budget that is different to the normal cake but also something he would love - and what kid doesn't love icecream!
Thanks for sharing!

Shaped birthday cakes are
actually really easy to make! First, draw out a simple shape that you want it to be. It could be an animal, a number, anything. If you're doing a kids' birthday party theme, make one that fits the theme. Just make a cake a little larger than the drawing, and cut it out once it's baked. Then frost the top and the sides, and you'll never know it wasn't made that way. You can even buy fancy cake molds that make shaped cakes without any work. Instead of a plain round or rectangular tape, try making a cake shaped like their favorite TV character's head, and use icing to decorate it.
