Discussion Board: Primary Schoolers

Hi all,
My 8 yr old son has taken to self-stimulation by lying on the ground and rubbing himself against the floor while reading. The good news is, his reading is going well! My concern is that it is becoming a bit compulsive. We have talked about privacy etc. and he is pretty good - keeps it in his room (although I saw him at it when I picked him up from after school care once). He can sometimes do it for up to an hour a day! I don't have too many people to discuss it with because I am a young single dad who is doing my best (and quite proud of it) but I am definitely out of my league on this one. I read that excessive sexual behaviour can be indicative of abuse, but I gather that more relates to knoweldge beyond their years (like adult games), and my son definitely has not made the connection between this and any kind of sexual activity. It just feels good! He even called it his Pee-Nice time. Part of me finds it amusing, but is it normal? How to manage it without coming down hard and giving him some kind of hang-ups later? Perhaps its just the Tintin books?

Some boys start to go through pubity a little earlier than others I think. They start to notice that certian things feel good. Its very embarassing for the parents I think more so than the child!

Our 9yo boy used to like to play with his willy and would hold it through his pants.
I ended up having to ask him why he did that, his answer, cause it feels good. We had the whole appropriate talk thing, and it stopped in public. His teacher commented on it once to me, that was soooooooooo embarassing! But she said that other boys in the class abit older than him were doing similar things. So I think its normal. They just need to learn when they can and when they can not do that.

Our boy keeps it rather private now. I had to give him the whole "talk" because daddy was too embarassed to... I just let him know that while he may not be embarassed about doing that in front of poeple, that other people found it abit embarassing when he did it in front of them. I explained that its perfectly normal for boys to do that, and that when he wanted to do that kind of thing, becasue its with his "private bits" that it is something that he should do in private.

Just let him know that its natural, but private, and that other poeple might get embarassed.

And just what is it with boys and Tin tin books?? Both my boys love them too!!!

I remember finding my little brother(ten years younger) doing the same thing in bed when I was babysitting him. I made out I didnt see him, he was around 7 or 8. gathered it was just human discovery.

Have never told him !! he is bigger than me now
