Discussion Board: Toddlers and Pre-schoolers

My 20 mth old sweet heart is a great sleeper (2 naps a day and all night), wonderful eater of all that is put in front of her, uses her manners and is a loving little mite. Just one thing that we can not understand or know what to do about - she masturbates in her push chair, the shopping trolley and her high chair - all things that have the harnes strap between her legs.
She started when she was less than 6 mths old and we want to know why? When will it stop? It is kind of embarassing, we know we shouldn't care what others think of it but we do, we know we should just ignore it, but it seems very hard to when it interupts her eating or we can not take her out of the trolley at shops because she hasn't 'fnished'!! Help?

I have 3 boys, so I won't be much help I dont think!!
But I know that my brothers secopnd to youngest daughter was like that too, only she would lay on the couch with her legs up in the air and do it too.. most embarassing. But oneday she just stopped.

My 2 oldest sons used to hold the front of their pants. They both went through a stage of it. But once they learnt when it was inappropriate and that other people didn't like seeing that. Then they seemed to grow out of it.

I think they do it because it feels nice.

But it may pay to ask your plunket nurse, or nurse at the doctors or even the doctor if its concerning you.
