Dear Parent,
This section covers
ear, nose and throat conditions which can be difficult to manage and acutely painful;
respiratory system function may be affected also, which is stressful as difficulty with breathing is very distressing for the child and the parents. Fortunately there is much that can be done to help children who are prone to common ear, nose and throat (ENT) infections - both medically (via a specialist) and through managing symptoms at home.
Some respiratory infections and ear, nose and throat infections have become rare in New Zealand, due to immunisation - for example whooping cough and mumps. It is wise to remain vigilant, however, as there may still be outbreaks of these diseases and some require prompt medical treatment.
Each article on
ear, nose, throat & respiratory conditions describes the disease, its signs and symptoms and the most common treatments. In addition, the risks and complications are explained and there is a great section in each article on what we can do at home, to ease symptoms and help keep our children comfortable.
