The National Association for Loss and Grief (NALAG) is a voluntary, non-profit organisation which focuses on issues related to loss and grief. It is recognised by a wide cross-section of the caring professions and interested members of the community.
NALAG branches extend throughout New Zealand and links are maintained to similar organisations in Australia, Canada, the US and the UK.
What does it do?
Communities benefit when grief is handled well in society, and when the unhelpful responses of unresolved grief are avoided. Through branch meetings, seminars, conferences, and newsletters, NALAG members are able to share their interests and knowledge and to grow personally and professionally.
The aims of NALAG are:
- To encourage and promote professional and community education in the areas of loss and grief.
- To encourage direct assistance in the form of individual counselling and group support to those suffering the effects of loss and grief.
- To encourage investigation, study, and research into the human experience of loss and grief.
- To coordinate grief-related activities at a local level.
- To liaise between related national and local organisations.
How is it funded?
NALAG national office is funded from membership subscriptions. Local branches are self-supporting and attract grants.
How can I get their help?
Help from NALAG comes in the form of referral to professional bodies. NALAG is an umbrella organisation and people looking for assistance are guided to a professional in their area.
Anyone can contact NALAG directly and receive help.
How much does it cost?
A person does not need to be a member of NALAG to receive help, but membership to NALAG means a person can often register for training seminars at a reduced rate and there is a quarterly teaching newsletter available.
NALAG has no grief counsellors of its own, but most grief counsellors belong to NALAG. NALAG can be a link to other organisations. People seeking counselling would have to pay the counselling fees, but some counselling is subsidised by Work and Income.

This site introduces NALAG and outlines its mission. NALAG Newsletters are available on the site and there are sections on events and branch news. The resources section outlines a number of helpful books covering all aspects of loss. NALAG’s resources are now integrated with those of Skylight so both organisations can keep up with the latest information without duplicating each other’s efforts.
