It was geared towards secondary school, but I found much of the advice relevant for our younger sons as well. As usual, it was well attended by genuine, caring parents so it is always a bit like preaching to the converted.

Talk to your children about the Important Stuff.
Taking the time to talk… and not lecture your children about the important issues is sometimes really hard. More often than not when the opportunity arises in our house I am too busy or too tired.
Much has been said lately about wrapping your kids up in cotton wool. I have been as guilty as most about being over protective, however the more kids you have the less paranoid you tend to be.
I spoke at a function the other night to raise money for a wonderful woman who has Her2 breast cancer. I don’t know the woman or her friends but was privileged to be asked.
Although I did wonder…what sort of country do we live in when a woman in her prime with two young children has to rely on the generosity of her friends and complete strangers for that matter.
I am sure he looks in the mirror and thinks…crikey I don’t believe I am old enough to get behind the wheel of a car. And as long as he is deliberating there won’t be any encouragement from his father or myself.
It appears that the topic of the moment is the ever increasing “cost of living “ particularly the basic necessities such as food. You can imagine that with four growing boys in our household our weekly grocery bill is burgeoning out of control.
Only 3 more weeks left of Term 1. I seem to have just recovered from the last holidays. As much as I enjoy the break from routine, the holidays start to become harder and harder keeping them occupied and busy without spending an extraordinary amount of money. Two of the boys have birthdays these holidays so it is an even more expensive exercise. I used to be able to get away with combining the two parties, but now it is a definite “no no”, especially as my soon to be 12 year old wishes to invite girls. Secretly I am quite looking forward to that.
