I’m not really a very technological person but I was interested to see how the ASUS  T100 Tablet computer compared to the iPad that I’m used to. It’s a really compact and light weight tablet and it has the added advantage of having a keyboard that attaches and detached. I travel a lot so this is quite appealing to me.

I’m liking

I really like the ability to customise the home screen, as an Apple user being able to resize the tiles and have live tiles is nice.

I also like being able to split the screen and have two applications running at the same time. Having to switch between screens is frustrating on my laptop so I really liked this feature.

When watching a downloaded movie the depth of colour was great, however, the sound through the speakers was quite quiet, so it worked better with headphones where the sound was fantastic.

Things that made me go hmmmm

Compared to my iPad the camera isn’t as good, at least under low light. I’ve just recently been travelling where I used my phone and tablet instead of a conventional camera. I’m not sure that I’d use this tablet as a camera substitute.

Using the button to put the tablet to sleep somehow still seems to consume battery. There have been a number of times that a few days after putting the tablet to sleep, it wouldn’t restart because it was flat. However, there does seem to be an update to fix this minor problem on the ASUS support website. Shutting down the tablet and restarting is very very fast so this is the best way to ensure that the battery isn’t wasted. Starting up the tablet is incredibly rapid, a colleague who is an IT professional was shown the tablet and he couldn’t believe how quickly it starts.

The conclusion

I’m not a technological person, but once I was shown how to use the tablet I found it easy to navigate and use. The ability to switch so rapidly between work tools (the Microsoft packages that come with the tablet) and the recreational apps is nice.

One application I particularly liked was the microsoft news app. I loved being able to look at newspapers all around the world. ASUS isn’t a brand I knew much about, but I’m really impressed.
