In a world dazzled by the latest gadgets and mesmerized by Internet videos, the humble book seems like the most ordinary thing that could be. And perhaps it is until you learn to look closer . . . and closer . . . and closer . . . and you’re suddenly in a world that only you can imagine. It’s this world that Book, by David Miles and illustrated by Natalie Hoopes explores.

I’m liking

(Caitlin aged 6) I liked that it told you information about the thing it was talking about but it was a bit mysterious. Like something you had to solve. I liked that it was like a collage with bits of ripped up words in different languages.

(Rochelle) The story is sparse and leaves plenty to the imagination. The real joy in this book is in the images, which have a magical, dream-like quality. This book reminds me quite a lot of The Boring Book, which we also very much enjoyed.

Things that made me go hmmmm

(Caitlin) I found of it a bit confusing the first time I read it.

The conclusion

This is a book for book lovers. The story is simple and not heavy handed and the pictures and detailed enough for many return reads. It’s a beautiful book. It was a tricky read for my 6 year old as there was quite a lot of metaphorical language, but it did give us lots to talk about.
