When a child gets to two or so, I find they start to love to identify nursery rhymes. When they get familiar with something it seems so exciting to them that it is well known and represented in lots of different ways in books, and perhaps on CDs, DVDs etc. The Lion Book of Nursery Rhymes is a reasonably comprehensive collection of nursery rhymes and is a great addition to your home library.

I’m liking

This is a robust little book with rounded corners and padded hardback covers. It should go the distance!

Happy, bright pictures can even make the most disturbing nursery rhymes seem joyful…! My 3yo son has really enjoyed identifying the nursery rhymes he knows through the pictures in this book and then reciting them, sometimes in the most hilarious of ways, because getting your head around some of the words can be tough (and cute!) I think this sort of book is great for language development.

The back of the book has an index of first lines which is really handy – as there are 95 pages of nursery rhymes!

Things that made me go hmmmm

Some of the rhymes seem quite obscure to me, but that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It will add longevity to the interest of this book as kids grow older and start reading.

The conclusion

Every home should have a book of nursery rhymes, and this is a beautifully presented and comprehensive book.

Julia Stone’s The Lion Book of Nursery Rhymes is published by Lion Hudson and retails for $24.99.
