Rhyme & Reo: aeiou teaches Te Reo to small children, presenting a fun way to learn Maori vowel sounds and illustrated with fun images.

I’m liking

This is a great resource for teaching children in a way that they will develop confidence in speaking Te Reo Maori. Each short, fun (English) rhyme in the book is accompanied by a simple explanation of the way the vowel sounds – using the English words to illustrate the Te Reo vowel sound. As readers master the five basic sounds they will be able to try any Maori word with confidence.

Things that made me go hmmmm

It’s not the sort of book my preschooler wants to pick up and have read to him often – it’s got a purpose and so would be more useful in a teaching context than for the everyday reader.

The images are cute but something about the coloured pencil effect comes off as slightly amateur.

The conclusion

Suitable for ages 2-6 approximately, this book is a useful resource for home and the classroom. Adults will likely learn something from it too!
