A follow up to “Rosie to the Rescue“, Rosie’s Radical Rescue Ride is another DairyNZ book to educate children on the workings of dairy farms. Filled with familiar NZ scenes, this is the tale of Rosie saving the day once again – this time by helping out with the hay that needs to be baled quickly despite the fact that the tractor has broken down.
I’m liking
This is another really fun tale involving Rosie. It’s truly creative and it addresses a real problem in the farming world, the likes of which it’s really good for Kiwi children to know about. I can remember the stresses of hay baling and its weather dependency from when I grew up on a dairy farm. Rosie has to come up with a solution given the broken down tractor. Her solution is truly a novel one in the vein of number 8 wire and making things work with what you have!
Things that made me go hmmmm
Is it too much to ask to have a book like this missing the word ‘fart’?? I guess it is. Sigh.
The conclusion
Written in easy to read metric rhyme, with lots of alliteration and hilarity, this is another winner from Kyle Mewburn. Lots of children of early school age will just love it, and though the story is very unrealistic – that’s its charm – there are many teachable elements that come through the text.
I can’t help but wonder if the next in the series will be Rosie rescuing the dairy farmer from a situation with the bank manager…??!
