Kiwi Scott Tulloch is a talented children’s writer. He creates engaging, enjoyable reads for small people that will also delight parents reading aloud. This is a unique book, it is entirely dialogue with speech bubbles. I am no good at putting on voices, but my husband is excellent at doing this – and our son is excited to hear daddy read this book time and again. With different voices, it’s easy for children to follow what is going on. And once your child can read for themselves, they’ll enjoy this introduction to dialogue and the interaction between the chameleon and his squirmy ‘friend’
The pictures are really fun, and the book is educational in a humourous way – you can discuss how chameleons change in relation to their environment, how caterpillars become butterflies, and how teasing irritates other people!
Things that made me go hmmmm
Some of the conversation runs along the lines of ‘no I didn’t!’, ‘yes, you did!’. “I’m not!’, ‘Yes, you are!’ This sort of talk isn’t something my son has experienced so I was slightly hesitant when introducing the book, that he would pick up on and use some of that back and forward in conversation. That hasn’t happened (yet…)!
The conclusion
This is a really cute little tale, with a great ending that a two year old upwards will understand. It’s also going to be a good book with simple, short sentences, for early readers. Recommended for ongoing enjoyment, especially if there’s a person who is clever at putting on voices in your family.
