Panicking about what to do with the kids these holidays? You’re not alone. While the kids get excited because school’s out, childcare can become a parent’s nightmare. That’s when holiday programmes can save the day, not just for you, but for your children too. Here’s why.

When the average full-time working parent gets 4 weeks of holidays and their kids get 13 weeks, managing childcare during school holidays can be challenging to say the least. Even if you’re not working, if this weather continues, energetic kids stuck within the 4 walls of your home can become a recipe for disaster!

It’s times like this when school holiday programmes can be a lifesaver. Not only is it a load off your mind knowing your children are in a safe and happy place, there’s so much the kids get out of these programmes too. Amy Moreland, Out of School Care Manager, shares why she thinks your family will love YMCA Auckland’s Holiday Programme.

Parents and Caregivers Perks

Peace of mind – Our experienced leaders have seen it all before, they’ve experienced all types of characters and scenarios. And communication channels are always open, so we’ll feedback if we have any concerns and tell you about the cool stuff we’ve been up to too!

Flexible times to suit your commute – Most YMCA Holiday Programmes provide before and after care starting from as early as 7 am and finishing at 6 pm allowing you to drop off and beat the traffic!

Affordability – We appreciate the pressure of child care costs and consider this when setting our prices. We provide multiple activity options to suit your budget and can help you with applications for WINZ subsidies too. As a not for profit organisation we believe that cost should not be a barrier for any family and so you can apply for fee assistance too.

A screen free zone – Why would they need screens when there’s awesome activities such as swimming, bouncy castles and awesome trips? Phones and tablets will be forgotten as we keep your kids entertainment the old school way – fun!

A well-deserved break – Ever logged onto Facebook during the holidays and seen other parents tearing their hair out, counting down the days until their kids go back to school? We know they don’t mean it and parent-child quality time is great. Just recognise that sometimes an opportunity for some peace and quiet can be better for all!

Kids Perks

Meet their heroes – Remember when you were young and there was that teacher who was SO COOL. That’s who YMCA leaders become to our holiday programme kids – you’ll hear them raving about the leader who showed them how to do a handstand or helped them score in basketball. That’s probably why so many of our kids end up working for us when they grow up!

New skills – Exercising creative skills in arts and crafts or even getting ready for later life by learning to cook! We look out for kids passions and adapt the programme to their interests. You never know you could have New Zealand’s next Master Chef living under your roof!

Friends for life – When a child comes to holiday programmes they are immediately launched into a group of kids, just like them! Having fun with kids their own age is so important, that’s why our leaders are experts in coaxing quieter kids out of their shells. The transformations in confidence during their time with us is incredible.

Explore their local community – Whether it’s a treasure hunt, trip to the local park or bike rides, holiday programmes are out there, around here in our local neighbourhoods. Where possible YMCA holiday programmes ‘buy local’ and have long-term trusted relationships with local providers.
