At this time of year, we’re all looking forward to some time away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, to relax and re-charge and enjoy the warmer Summer weather. Find out more about nostalgia tourism, and how to recreate your own childhood holiday memories.

Planning for Christmas can be stressful, and with the kids off school and work often ramping-up before the close of the year, it’s important to schedule some time away and plan a break somewhere that allows you to relax and unwind.

Nostalgia Tourism

Waiheke Island-Kiwi Families

According to Bookabach’s latest research* when we plan a holiday in New Zealand, the favourite places we holidayed as children are the places we want to revisit, because of a desire to recreate and relive those memories with our own families and to strengthen connections with those who are important to us.

This ‘Nostalgia Tourism’ trend revealed in the study showed that two thirds (65 per cent) of Kiwis have revisited a holiday location in an attempt to recreate past memories and an additional 23 per cent would like to do this in the future. Millennials (those aged 18-36 years) are driving this trend with this group being more likely than any other demographic to want to recreate holiday memories (92 per cent vs. an average of 86 per cent for other age groups).

The research also revealed that a family holiday was the source of a favourite childhood memory over other significant occasions such as a birthday party or the arrival of a sibling.

More than eight in ten Kiwis (87 per cent) said their most favourite holiday overall had been with family and one in two (56 per cent) had tried to recreate similarly strong holiday memories for loved ones.

Anna Reeve knows the value of taking holidays with her family and recently travelled to her favourite childhood holiday destination – Tairua.

We’re so busy working, juggling the needs of the boys and our schedules, taking time to have a break and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxing setting is something I put high on the priority list” says Anna.

“I hadn’t been back to Tairua since I was 12, but used to holiday there as a child several times a year and have such happy memories hanging out with family and spending time at the beach together with friends. What I discovered going back there recently is that those memories all came flooding back to me, and all the things I loved about the place were just the same, this time experienced with my own kids and husband.”

“The bach was a home away from home – and I could relax and just enjoy the space and the views, cook meals together and go to all the favourite places I spent time at as a child. My favourite activity was actually sitting and looking at the spectacular view of the ocean, reading a book, while the kids and Jay mucked about in the garden.”
