Having a new baby is exciting, exhausting and time consuming. It can also be a frustrating time for your older child or children. Continue reading »

Checkerboard Unicorn Cake Tutorial

One of our best friends’ daughters was turning six recently.  I asked her what she wanted on her cake… and she said a unicorn.  So this is what we created for her birthday party.  It’s really simple.  Really simple!  But pretty effective.  Here is a step by step tutorial so you can recreate the cake.  It has a checkerboard effect when cut (which is not time consuming or difficult, though it appears both 😉 ).  The most difficult thing is the unicorn, and if this troubles you – just buy one and stick it on top! Spending time as a family

Our family relocated from the hustle and bustle of suburban Auckland for the laid back lifestyle of rural Taranaki a few months ago.  My girls are aged 10 and 12, and this move was a big deal for them.  It’s always hard to leave your friends behind, and at 12, it’s not always easy to make new friends either.  I am pleased to report however that both girls have settled in well and are really loving their small rural school and everything that goes with it. Creative party themes

My girls are quite creative, I guess they take after their mum in that respect.  They both love to colour, but my youngest has recently taken a real liking to freehand painting as well as collage.  My older daughter is starting to show her creative side in food.  She loves to cook for us and it’s a great way for her to experiment with new ingredients and flavours too.  They’ve both been fortunate enough to take part in an art extension class at school which has taught them lots of fantastic skills. Growing great families and creating great birthdays

My daughter Sophie turns 11 next week.  She’s also in her last year of primary school.  I am struggling with all of this to be honest.  My girls seem to be growing up so fast, everything is changing so quickly and I’m just not sure I’m ready for it.  I’d love to be able to turn the clock back a couple of years to slow it all down. Beautiful baby showers

I didn’t have a baby shower with either of my pregnancies.  It just wasn’t really something that was done back then.  But boy things have really changed in the past 8 to 10 years.  Baby showers nowadays are much more common place and are often just as elaborate as any other special celebration. Healthy birthday party options

Strawberry Jelly Cups

I will always remember being invited to a party when I was probably 8 or 9 and to my horror they served up only healthy food.  I probably went to loads of parties at that age but that is the only one I remember, probably because of the food.  Continue reading »

Birthday party ideas that won’t blow the budget

As the first day of February dawned, I realised with horror that my youngest daughter Emily turned 9 in less than a month and I had done absolutely nothing to organise a celebration for her.  You’d think given that I design party stationery for a living that I’d be more organised than that – well you’re wrong.  I’m very good at organising everyone else.  Me … not so much.
