Charlie and His Amazing Tales

Charlie and his amazing tales

Charlie and His Amazing Tales is that special kind of quirky humour in a book that appeals to thinking kids. It’s the sort of story that doesn’t dull, and retains it’s interest through multiple readings (always a good quality in a children’s book!).

The author, Dawn McMillan and illustrator, Ross Kinnaird, are the clever collaboration that brought us I Need a New Bum! That bestseller from 2012 continues to be a bedtime favourite at our place. Charlie is the third follow up by this clever duo, who also brought us Doctor Grundy’s Undies and Squeakopotamus.

Charlie is a dog for sale, for only $10! A young boy is interested in buying Charlie, afterall the price is so cheap, right? Charlie goes on to regale the boy with the most exciting, albeit outlandish tales. Great adventures of being a spy, amazing skills like singing, and taking selfies. But the more the boy hears, the more he wonders, could it all be true…

Charlie and His Amazing Tales is told in rhyme, and the rhythm and wording is nice and simple, and makes reading out loud enjoyable. The illustrations are vibrant, and really add to the excitement of Charlie’s tall tales. This is a story about being true to oneself, accepting ourselves for who we are, and being brave enough to just be ourselves in front of others.

It’s also a quirky story about a boy and a dog… that can use the loo. What’s not to love here!
