Te Papa and Weta Workshop bring you a science exhibition like no other – a spectacular, immersive experience ‘designed by bugs, for humans’.
Te Papa says you’ll, “over immerse yourself in the world of bugs, learn from their genius, and discover how their amazing abilities are inspiring human innovation.” And it certainly isn’t misleading. ‘Over-immersed’ is definitely how I would describe the experience!
The bug exhibits from Weta Workshop are all-encompassing, interactive, and almost intoxicating experiences. As soon as you walk out the end of one, you just want to walk straight back in and experience it all over again.
What I’m Liking
The Weta Workshop experiences are obviously the crowd pleasers here. But there’s lots more besides this. Kids can learn how to fly paper ‘bugs’, there’s lots of informative and interactive stations to learn from, and there’s even a kid’s slide in there that smells like a beehive.
There’s also a bunch of interactive events for all ages being held throughout the exhibition such as:

Anything to improve
Both my wife and I thought that the exhibition was a little short. We actually spent almost 2 hours there, which is great value for money. But it seemed like there could have been 1 or 2 more of the Weta Workshop exhibits to really full out the experience.
Of course, it was for the kids and not for us! And our kids were definitely well ‘immersed’ by the end of it, and ready to head off for afternoon tea.
Conclusion
There’s really not much more to say about this one. This is an absolutely must see exhibition. If you live in Wellington and have kids, then you have to take them to see it. If you’re outside of Wellington, then a long weekender in Wellies should be on the cards, just to see it. You kids certainly won’t be disappointed by this one!
