Popular Wellington-based children’s author Ruth Paul is back with Bad Dog Flash, a lovely new picture book with simple words to delight your toddler or preschooler. Cute watercolour and pencil illustrations carry you through around-home adventures with mischevious Flash.

I’m liking

Flash is hilarious for kiddos – he thinks he is just playing and following his instincts, but he invariably gets in trouble for following his nose just a step too far. Sounds like most toddlers I know! Children can really relate to this playful pup and his quick decisions that often see him get in trouble. The words are simple and fun to read, with lots of room for expression. The phrase ‘Bad Dog Flash!’ repeats over and over, giving your little person lots of opportunity to sneak in and tell Flash off while you’re reading. My son particularly loves waving his little finger up and down at poor wee Flash.

The book has a lovely, happy ending – so it’s not all bad for Bad Dog Flash.

The conclusion

The perfect length to hold a small person’s attention, I enjoy reading this book to kids. It’s snappy, fun text would suit a classroomsetting as well as any home with small mischevious children! With appeal for 1-4+ year olds, they will soon be ‘reading’ parts of it themselves, as the repetitive text is easy to catch on to.

Published by Scholastic, Bad Dog Flash retails for approximately $20.
