After a lot of rain, there is a problem on the farm. How can the farmer get his milk into town? Well, it’s Rosie to the Rescue of course! This book written by Kyle Mewburn is the tale of a heroic cow and her friends who help her along the way.
I’m liking
Whatever way you look at it, the dairy industry is important to us kiwis. Rosie is the New Zealand dairy industry’s Cowbassador, charged with the lofty task of informing kiwi kids about dairy farming and the story of milk. There are some educational parts to this story, though it’s largely fantasy and pretty funny in places!
The illustrations by Flux Animation are pretty unique – often adding cartoon figures to real backgrounds. The scenes are very familiar as typical kiwi countryside.
Things that made me go hmmmm
This is an entertaining wee book, though initially I thought by reading it to my son, he would learn about how milk gets to us – the process of farming, milking, milk tankers, processing plants and that sort of thing. That’s not the basis of the story, but together with other things Rosie is involved in (stage shows, www.rosiesworld.co.nz etc.) I’m sure the full picture is constructed for children.
The conclusion
This book is fun, and provides a few laughs across the pages. 2-4 year olds will enjoy the funky illustrations, the rhyming text and the unique solution that Rosie comes up with to the problem at hand.
