I’d just been thinking about making a cool decorative wall clock, when I was going through the aisle at Spotlight, only to see all the elements I need to make and paint my own decorative wall clock! I was so excited. Turns out that clocks are super easy to make when you have the right gear.
This is a great project for older kids to do during the holidays or to make as a cool homemade gift for friends or family. I cost me around $30 all up to make. So as far as presents go it’s really affordable, and definitely a unique gift!
Plus making your own decorative wall clock is a great way to brighten up your walls. And you can use a colour scheme that’s going to work well in your own house. I love checking out Pinterest for inspiration for this type of project. I stumbled across these two bright and colourful wall clock ideas that would be great in a kid’s room. The first one is a bright and colourful donut clock and the other is a cake wall clock with a slice taken out of it.
This is what originally inspired me to try out making my own wall clock. But what I really wanted was a design that was more modern and funky, and something that a teenager would love to have on their wall.
For my own decorative wall clock, I choose some soft pastel colours and left some of the wood exposed to give it a modern geographic element. I really love how it turned out so much that we decided to hang it in our home office. And now I get to look at it every day.
How to make your own decorative wall clock
You will need
A wood clock face (I got mine from Spotlight but there’s a place called Clock Works online which have them priced fairly cheap. If you’re handy with a drill and jigsaw, you could easily cut one out of thin plywood)
Battery powered clock kit
Acrylic paint (the colours IÂ went with are Resene Gelato and Resene Heartbreaker)
Paint brush
Masking tape
Want to do
Tape down the middle of your clock face from top to bottom (or from 12 o’clock to 6 o’clock). You want to tape just a few millimeters off centre, so that you can paint right up to the centre line. Make sure the tape is firmly pressed down to avoid the paint leaking underneath the tape.
Paint one half of the clock in Resene Heartbreaker or your chosen colour. It will need at least 2 coats, 3 is better for a good depth of colour as plywood is very porous.
Let it dry.
Once the paint is completely dry remove your tape. If you can let the first colour dry for a good few hours. Otherwise you might run the risk of pulling the paint off when you tape down to apply the second colour.
Tape off your second colour so that it covers just over 1/4 of the clock face (or from 12 o’clock to 4 o’clock) and paint it in Resene Gelato. Once again, use 2 to 3 coats of paint.
Leave to dry, then remove the tape.
Attach your battery powered clock kit as per the instructions, and attach a battery. If you’re only able to source the decorative clock hands like I found, just snip off the decorative ends to give your clock a more modern appeal.
Hang your homemade decorative wall clock in your favourite place.
