This simple buttercream icing recipe is very versatile, and easily flavoured to suit your baking needs. 

The possibilities for decorating on top of your icing are endless too. Most supermarkets now sell a good range of sprinkles, icing pens and edible decorations that are easy for little hands to handle.

And many small lollies also make cute and simple decorations.

Just use this simple buttercream icing recipe as the canvas on top of your cupcakes, and let your decorating imagination run wild!

Flavourings for buttercream

  1. Try adding a few drops of juice and the rind of a lemon or orange into the mix
  2. Sift in a few tablespoons of cocoa when you add the icing sugar
  3. Even sifting in strawberry jam, or strawberry compote will give you a simple sweet and pink icing

Simple Buttercream Icing Recipe

This basic buttercream icing is very versatile and easily flavoured.

Ingredients

  • 100 g butter softened
  • 1 1/2 cups icing sugar
  • 2-3 drops vanilla essence
  • 1-2 Tbsp milk

Instructions

  1. Beat the butter until it is pale and fluffy.  

  2. Sift in the icing sugar, add the vanilla essence and milk, and mix until you have a light, fluffy mixture. Add extra milk if you need a softer consistency.

  3. Spread or pipe icing over cupcakes, and top with decorations as desired.

Recipe Notes

Allow the icing to set before serving. And, as with our Basic Cupcakes Recipe, you can try flavouring your icing to suit your tastebuds.
