Cheeky elves Filly and Pilly have fallen on hard times after shooting wrapped on The Hobbit. Lucky for them, Gordon the cobbler is looking for some help in turning his sensible shoe shop into a fancy footwear emporium. For fantastic school holiday fun, check out Kidz Stuff Theatre production of The Elves and the Shoemaker.

I’m liking

This is the first show I’ve seen from Kidz Stuff Theatre and I was so impressed. The show had all the elements you would expect in kids’ theatre… silly jokes, songs, plenty of audience participation and even the obligatory calls of “Behind you! Behind you!”.

Rachel Henry’s script was a lovely ‘Welly’ twist on a well-known fairytale. It was snappy and witty (with plenty of jokes for mums and dads). Directed by Sherilee Kahui, the cast of Drew Brown, Comfrey Sanders, Jonathan Price and Johanna Cosgrove was full of high-energy fun and all weighed in to ensure that there was never a dull moment. The children I went with loved the way that the cast interacted with the audience and this kept the kids intrigued the whole way through. 45 minutes was just the right length for everyone’s attention spans!

The conclusion

For school holiday fun for the primary school set in Wellington, I couldn’t recommend The Elves and the Shoemaker more. Tickets are $10 each (with under 2s going free) and you can book via their website: http://www.kidzstufftheatre.co.nz/shows/elves-and-shoemaker-july-2015 The show is on at the Tararua Tramping Club until the 18th of July. Go! Enjoy!
