Bear Grylls – he’s a hero of sorts.  He chose to live his life on the edge after being inspired by a number of other heroes, and this book brings together those people’s stories.  True Grit: Junior Edition is abridged from the original, making it suitable for the tween/teen age bracket, and probably some of the more resilient younger folks too.

I’m liking

Each feature story is relatively short, 10-14 pages long. You catch a glimpse at what has made each person heroic, but you are not inundated with detail which is great. The variety of adventures these folks have been on is quite impressive, and they reflect many corners of the globe (including a story of New Zealand’s Nancy Wake).

These are the stories to inspire young people that life beyond the X-Box is calling to them!  Stories of bravery, resilience and beating the odds… stories that will make you see that the human spirit is capable of far more than we might imagine possible.

Things that made me go hmmmm

This is totally written the way Bear Grylls speaks – lots of dramatic pauses and add ons to the end of sentences. You can’t help but read it with his voice in your head!

The conclusion

An excellent collection of real-life inspirational tales to share with your kids. Maybe be selective about the ones you read with them right before bed; there is a little bit of gore in places. But that’s life, it’s often not glamourous – and these men and women chose to make it their mission to go beyond the comfort and safety of the everyday. Highly recommended.

True Grit: Junior Edition is published by RandomHouse and retails for $19.99.
