Sarah O’Neil (Sarah the Gardener) who wrote The Good Life, is back with her second title to motivate Kiwi gardeners – Play in the Garden. With 120 pages of gardening inspiration perfect for encouraging the 5-12+ year old age bracket to get outdoors, there are many projects that cover the growing season. This is a fantastic new book for NZ kids.

I’m liking

You’ll be amazed at what you can grow from your groceries and at what very cool projects can take place in your back yard. The ideas contained here are both practical (scare away the birds from your strawberry patch in a few easy steps!) and inspiring (have a picnic in your own bean teepee! I just want to take a tea party to one of these right now!).

If your garden is in the early development stage, there are heaps of tips and tricks in this title that will help you with the set up, put you on the right track and give you and your kids the knowledge to succeed. I love the fact that this book will help you get alongside your kids in the great outdoors and help you do something practical together – that will help save you money and build memories too!

Sarah has involved her two boys in the writing of the book, and they feature in lots of the pictures. So rest assured, this is not a book that will just sit on the shelf – as Tim & Joey say – “You don’t have to do all the hard work any more because there are lots of cool things you can do instead! So go and tell the grown-ups that you want to play in the garden.”

The conclusion

You need to put this on the list of gifts to buy for your kids this Christmas! What could be better – you’ll give them heaps of inspiration for getting outside, experimenting with growing and playing.

Play in the Garden is published by New Holland and retails for $34.99.
