Biblical baby names are the mainstay of the most popular names. Find out what the top biblical names are for boys and biblical baby names for girls in 2024.
The trendy names come and go with the whims of what’s currently cool. But the names on this list, year in year out, remain very popular, and with good reason. Biblical names have wonderful meanings behind them, as well as all that history! You’ll find some of those on our baby names and their meanings page.
The reason we call the names on this list ‘biblical baby names’ is because you’ll find them in the bible, either in the new or old testament. So that means some of the names on our list have been around for thousands of years, quite literally.
And I think that’s why people keep coming back to biblical names when it comes to naming their own child. These names have serious provenance and precedent!
And popular they are! Many of these names continuously make the top ten baby name lists each year. In fact, Michael and Mary have consistently ranked in the top 10 or 20 names for the last 100 years, in most Western countries around the world.
The archangel Michael is found in the old testament and came to Moses, Jacob and Abraham with messages from God. He’s known as the great protector of the Jewish people, and the great captain of the angels. The name Michael can be found in the Bible, the Torah, and the Quran. The name is found as far back as the 3rd century BC, in the Book of Enoch.
So that’s some pretty epic provenance! No surprises it’s a popular name still.
Mary is also a name of great Hebrew provenance, known as Mariam or Miryam in the Hebrew Bible. Obviously the name is more famously known from the New Testament, first mentioned in the Story of the Annunciation. In fact, Mary as the Mother of Jesus was such an important name that it was much less commonly used before the 17th century. But over the last couple hundred years it has soared in popularity into the top 10 spots.
So, along with Michael and Mary, what are some of the other most popular biblical baby names in 2022? Check out our list of boy names from the bible and girl names from the bible below:
