The Brother ScanNCut is a brilliant machine for crafters. It’s an amazing way to make cutting designs that have a professional quality. The ScanNCut Fabric and Paper Cutting Machine, which was the one that I tried, can cut both paper and fabric.

I’m liking

If you love scrap booking, quilting, card making or any kind of home crafting, you’ll *love* the Brother ScanNCut. It’s a digital cutting machine that will create any design that you can imagine. It’s as simple as telling it what you want to cut out and pressing go. My 3 and 5 year olds were astonished to see their names print out before their very eyes!

I was impressed by the quality of the cut images and the way that I could manipulate the images to create pretty much anything I wanted. While there is a library of images (including letters) that you can use, you can easily adapt these or create your own.

The booklet that came with the machine had some amazingly inspirational ideas including cupcake wrappers and bunting. I’d have love to have spent more them fiddling around and trying some out.

Things that made me go hmmmm

The only thing that I found off-putting about this was the price. Retailing at $700, these machines are probably for the serious crafter or someone who is looking to develop a home business. There is a slightly cheaper version that only cuts paper – this retails at around $600. The accessories are also a bit pricey – a new cutting mat will set you back $35-$40.

The conclusion

This is a fantastic machine and I’d love to own one. However, as a very casual crafter, it’s a bit pricey for me. I’d love to see a slightly stripped backed version that was a bit more accessible for the home crafter.
