We’re so blessed to have access to the array of birdlife that we can see every day as a New Zealander.  Eleven iconic birds are detailed in this fun little book, written by Gillian Candler, and gorgeous illustrations by Fraser Williamson.

I’m liking

My four year old really enjoys Whose Beak Is This? and so do I. He takes delight in learning the way a bird looks and then correctly identifying when out and about.

This book is the perfect mix of fun and educational. Children are able to guess the identity of the birds by the pictures of their beaks, and then learn about the bird and their habitat in the facts provided when the bird’s identity is revealed. The concept of adaptation and how birds adapt to their environment is taught through the text, also.

The conclusion

I have gained great respect for Gillian Candler’s work since I’ve had a preschooler, and this book is a great addition to any child’s bookshelf. I recommend it for the 3-6 age bracket as a very educational, fun and worthwhile title.

Whose Beak Is This? by Gillian Candler, illustrated by Fraser Williamson, is published by potton&burton and has an RRP of $24.99 for the hardcover edition and $14.99 in paperback.
