The new series of brightly-illustrated books on transport by Catherine Foreman is called ‘Machines and Me’. Boats is one title in this series, which also includes planes, trains and tractors.

I’m liking

“Boats, boats, all different sorts, out at sea or in the port”.

I like the cartoon-ish big illustrations together with the simple rhyming text in this book. It’s altogether very cute, lovely and reasonably quick to read, flows well and my toddler thinks it is brilliant. There are many familiar scenes for water-dwelling kiwi kids – we live near a port so the cruise ships, tug boats and other boats featured are fun to point out after we’ve been reading the book.

The conclusion

Great value at under $14, these books won’t sit on your shelf for long between readings. Excellent for ages 20 months until about 4; if you’ve got a transport-fan you will get your money’s worth from these titles I’m sure.

Boats and the other books in the Machines and Me series are published by Scholastic.
