Candle Tiny Tots Lift the Flap Bible presents eight Bible stories in a very simple, stripped-back manner. The stories encourage small readers to lift cardboard flaps in order to find out more about what happens.

I’m liking

This fairly robust, hardcover book contains the Bible stories of: Noah and the Ark, Moses and the Bulrushes, Daniel and the Lions, Jonah and the Great Fish, Born in a Stable, Boy with Loaves and Fishes, The Lost Sheep, and Man Lowered Through the Roof.

I like it and don’t like it for the same reason! It’s extremely simplified. This means if you know the stories from the Bible, you’ll be able to share them with your child as they lift the flaps and discover parts of what happens in scripture. Note, parts of. I think often children’s Bible story books contain so much information it can be hard for a small person to grasp what’s happening. The opposite is the case for this little book, there are literally one sentence explanations. Not enough for your child to really pick up the true story at all – but at the same time, I appreciate how I can fill the gaps left by the simple text in my own words at the right level for my son, while he is still engaged by interacting with the flaps.

Things that made me go hmmmm

The pictures are bright and fun, but not altogether authentic to the stories in scripture.

A lot of the flaps are things like an animal in one position, lift the flap to find the animal in another position. Which to me, seems kind of pointless. But to a small person, can be somewhat entertaining…

The conclusion

I think this book has its place, but as you can see from the above, I obviously have reservations about it. If it’s the only Bible story book you own, I’d have serious reservations about it, but it’s a happy supplement for the 10 months – 3 year old age group.

Lift the Flap Bible (Candle Tiny Tots) [Board book] is published by Candle Books/Lion Hudson and retails for around $14.99.
