With just a little preparation, your baby will be having a meal of steamed pears in no time at all.  Freeze leftovers in ice cube trays for quick go-to meals as required.

Pears should be steamed to soften them before serving as a first food to baby.  Pears are considered easily digestible and to be very low risk for causing any reactions.

Peel the pear and remove the flesh from the core with a sharp knife.  Discard the peel and core.

Cut the pear into small chunks.  Use a steaming basket over a small pot of boiling water and simmer gently, covered, until the pear is tender when a knife is inserted into a chunk.  If you do not have a steaming basket, put a small amount of water in the bottom of a pot along with the pear chunks.  Put a lid on the pot and simmer gently until tender.  Keep an eye on the level of water and ensure the pot does not boil dry, or the pear will quickly burn.

Once tender, remove the pear from the heat and leave it to cool thoroughly.  Mash with a fork or run it through a blender to achieve a puree.  Feed it to your baby on a small spoon.
