I don’t know about you but we are always losing my daughters hair clips! So in a vain attempt to create some organisation I decided to make this cloud hair clip holder.
I feel like hair clips are a little bit like left socks. Your kids start off with them, but by the end of the day they’ve just vanished! I often find them sprawled from one end of the house to the other.
Seriously, when I go looking for hair clips it’s not in the bathroom, or the bedroom shelf. Instead I’ll look in the cutlery drawer, or in one of the storage toy boxes, or underneath some random clothing pile somewhere!
With the right tools this cloud hair clip holder is super-simple to create, and only takes a few hours to complete (most of this time is just drying time too). But the end result looks great hanging on the wall. And it’s a useful exercise in beginning to teach your daughter about organising, and taking care of their own things. Once the hair clips are hanging up, they’re her responsibility!
DIY cloud hair clip holder
What you need
An offcut of plywood
A jigsaw
Sandpaper
Pencil
Cloud template (free cloud printable here)
Resene Quick Dry Primer and Resene Ballerina
Paint brush
Light blue and dark blue ribbons
Fishing nylon
Hot glue gun and glue
Blue Felt
What to do
1. First trace your cloud design onto a piece of plywood (our cloud was the size of roughly an A4 size piece of paper).
2. Cut out your cloud using a jigsaw. In order to hang the cloud up we cut two horizontal notches on each side of the clouds.
3. Next sand all the edges.
4. Using the Resene Quick Dry Primer paint your cloud and leave to dry, which won’t take long at all.
5. Once the primer is dry paint your cloud in Resene Ballerina. This will need at least 2 coats.
6. While you’re waiting for the paint to dry, draw 5 raindrops onto the blue felt and cut them out.
7. Measure and cut 5 pieces of ribbon to about 20cm long.
8. Glue the raindrops to the end of your ribbon.
9. When the paint is dry attach the ribbons to the cloud by hot gluing them to the back. Leave about a 2cm gap between each one. You can hang all of the drops evenly, or offset each raindrop. Both ways look good.
10. Attach the nylon by creating two loops one at each end. Then slip the loops into the slits you cut into the cloud.
