February, being the month in which love is celebrated on Valentine’s Day, it seemed only fitting to play around with heart art. Of course this craft idea is perfect for a gift idea any time, as well as other occasions such as birthdays, etc.

This is a great little painting activity that can be set up for kids both young and old. I think older children, or tweens, especially will love this activity.

I chose to do a few different hearts to give kids a range of ways to explore paint in a simple way. Follow along, then get creative and come up with your own designs.

Heart Art for Kids

You will need
A4 paper
Pencil
Ruler
Resene test pots in a range of bright colours (the Kidz Colour range is perfect)
Black permeant marker

What to do:
1. Using a ruler divide your page into 4.

2. In each square draw in 4 hearts. Don’t worry if they are not perfect any quirks can be painted over.

3. In each heart create a different pattern. I started by dividing the first heart into different sections and painting them in different colours, I then let that dry and used permanent marker to add in patterns.

4. For the second heart paint the heart 3 or more different colours from the inside-out using your Resene test pots. Sort of like a rainbow effect

5. In the third heart you can paint it in a loose abstract way by putting a splash of colour diagonal to each other. You can also mix a little bit of each colour into each other. Start with yellow, then blue and lastly add in some bright pink for a great contrast.

6. For the last heart I wanted to create some different texture. Use the end of the pencil and dot different colour paint all around until the heart is totally filled up.

7. For the back ground of each heart you can give your paint a water colour look by adding a small about of water to your page, then adding a small about of paint and pushing it around your background. This gives a really nice sort of ombre effect.

You can use a different colour for each background and you can even play around with mixing some colours together.

8. Once your background is dry, outline all of your hearts with a black permeant marker.

9. Lastly, if you love your image remember to sign it and frame it. Kids love to see their work hanging on the wall. And I think this makes a beautiful artwork.
